The Joshibi University of Art and Design has appointedmodern shōjo manga pioneer Moto Hagio as a guest professor. Hagio will lecture under the Field of Media Art and Design in the Department of Cross-Disciplinary Art and Design. The Field of Media Art and Design aims to train creators in anime, character design, visual arts, and other areas. The university is a historical women's institution of higher education with roots that date back over a century ago in the Tokyo area.
Hagio's works include A Drunken Dream, A, A', andThey Were Eleven. Along with To Terra's Keiko Takemiya and Rose of Versailles' Riyoko Ikeda, Hagio co-founded the Year 24 Group — a group of innovative female manga creators who were born in or around the Year Shōwa 24 (1949) and who shaped the now diverse field of shōjo manga.
Along the way, Hagio earned the Shogakukan Manga Award, Seiun Award, Osamu TezukaCultural Prize, Nihon SF Taisho Award, and Comic-Con International's Inkpot Award. Just last month, she received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award in the 40th Japan Cartoonist Awards.
